Open Source Licenses

USGS policy requires that software is released under an open-source license (OSL). The USGS provides a default starting point, but this may not be appropriate for all projects. For example, the default license may not be suitable if you use software libraries that restrict downstream licensing. As such, you may want to learn more about OSLs before choosing a license.

You can find an overview of these licenses here: OSL Overview

And the USGS also provides an overview of several common licenses at the bottom of this page: USGS Code

Separately, Github provides a helpful license-choosing tool here: ChooseALicense

If you are still not sure what type of license to choose, please consult with the Office of the Solicitor for guidance.
